Excessive Points on Your Record
The California DMV assigns a point value to traffic and vehicle code violations, and a maximum limit of points drivers are allowed to accumulate within given time. If a driver's point count exceeds the allowed quota, their driver's license will be revoked.
When the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) determines that a driver has exceeded the specified number of points on their driving record, they declare an excessive points suspension. A hearing is granted before the license suspension is official. In California, excessive points vary by a driver’s age:
- Drivers over age 21: 12 points in 12 months/18 points in 24 months
- Drivers ages 18-20: 9 points in 12 months/12 points in 24 months
- Drivers under age 18: 6 points in 12 months/7 points before age 18
- Points increase your insurance costs
An excessive points suspension affects your car insurance, too. Your insurance company runs an overview of your records when you renew or apply for insurance. If you have accumulated points on your license, your insurance may charge you more or even reject your policy.
